Just a little bit of digging reveals a fuller picture of American involvement in Afghanistan. What we find is eerily similar to the current conflict in Ukraine. The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan began December 24th, 1979. What precipitated this invasion? According to Robert Gates (Former Director of the CIA), President Carter approved a plan by Zbigniew Brzezinski to arm and use the Mujahedin to destabilize and potentially topple the pro-Soviet Afghan Government. The overall intent apparently was to pull the Soviet forces into Afghanistan, and give them their own Vietnam for the purpose of bleeding them. This seems to be the same playbook for Ukraine.
A current interview of Alastair Crooke (fmr Brit ambassador) led us down this exploration. Skip to 10 minutes for the relevant portion. Crooke makes the observation that Carter drew the Soviets into invading Afghanistan. That was a claim worth exploring.
What follows are articles exploring that claim. We collect articles, and avoid speaking for them. They speak for themselves. The collection is not yet complete.
As a result of interference in Afghanistan, 1 to 2.5 million were killed in the wars that followed according to Wikipedia estimates.

My point in the article is just to add more context.
What I'm observing is that prior to 1979, the USA had no interest whatsoever in Afghanistan. Afghanistan had several uprisings and revolutions prior to 79. Those were mostly their own affair, and America didn't care. In 79, the latest revolution left pro-Soviet Afghans in charge.
My opinion is that America started caring in 79 because they had a chance to bleed out the Soviets is all. Our then newfound concern was sold as helping the people and bringing peace, but America never felt the need to help them before. For that matter, legitimate concern and help rarely needs to be covert.
America basically used Afghans to kills Soviets, then bailed out. It feels like a theme.
These are the people we abandoned.
