U.S. nuclear bomber simulated firing missiles at St. Petersburg.

The U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, went to the position of firing missiles at St. Petersburg near Gotland Island, 200 kilometers from the northern capital.

💥 In Kupyansk direction, the attacks, launched by the aviation and artillery of the 'Zapad' Group of Forces, have resulted in the neutralisation of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near Gryanikovka (Kharkov region) and Rozovka (Lugansk People's Republic).

◽️ The enemy has lost up to 50 Ukrainian personnel, 5 armoured fighting vehicles, 3 motor vehicles, and 1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer.

💥 In Krasny Liman direction, the active action of the units, and the artillery operation of the 'Tsentr' Group of Forces have resulted in the neutralisation of the enemy manpower and hardware near Nevskoye and Chervonaya Dibrova (Lugansk People's Republic).

◽️ Up to 90 Ukrainian personnel, 2 armoured fighting vehicles, 2 pickups, 1 D-30 howitzer, and 1 Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system have been eliminated.

💥 In Donetsk direction, the active action of the units, and the artillery operation of the 'Yug' Group of Forces have resulted in the elimination of over 140 Ukrainian personnel, 2 armoured fighting vehicles, 4 pickups, 3 motor vehicles, and 2 D-30 howitzers near Zaliznyanskoye, Krasnoye, and Tonenkoye (Donetsk People's Republic).

💥 In South Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions, the aviation and artillery operations of the 'Vostok' Group of Forces have resulted in the neutralisation of the AFU units near Prechistovka and Ugledar (Donetsk People's Republic).

◽️ The enemy has lost up to 70 Ukrainian personnel, 3 armoured fighting vehicles, 1 motor vehicle, and 1 D-20 howitzer.

💥 In Kherson direction, firepower operations have resulted in the elimination of over 50 Ukrainian personnel, 3 armoured fighting vehicles, 14 motor vehicles, as well as the ordnance depot of 124th Territorial Defence Brigade of the AFU.

✈️💥 Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have neutralised 75 artillery units at their firing positions, manpower and hardware in 114 areas.

◽️ The U.S.-manufactured AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-50 counterbattery warfare radars have been destroyed near Konstantinovka and Privolye (Donetsk People's Republic).

💥 Air defence facilities have shot down 4 rocket-propelled projectiles, launched by HIMARS and Uragan multiple-launch rocket systems, as well as have intercepted 4 HARM anti-radiation missiles.

◽️ Moreover, 11 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have been destroyed near Pershotravnevoye (Kharkov region), Raygorodok, Oborotnovka, Ploshchanka (Lugansk People's Republic), Staromayorskoye, Shevchenko (Donetsk People's Republic), Kamenskoye, and Balochki (Zaporozhye region).

🔻 Border territories of the Russian Federation:

▪️Ukrainian formations attacked the village of Belevitsa in the Pogarsky district of the Bryansk region, but they managed to avoid casualties and destruction.

▪️In the Belgorod region, the enemy shelled the village of Yasnye Zori, damaging one of the hangars of an agricultural enterprise and injuring a man.

🔻Kharkiv region:

▪️After massive missile strikes by the Russian Armed Forces on critical infrastructure in Kharkiv, a significant part of the city remains without power supply, and in some areas even without water and heating.

🔻Starobelsk direction:

▪️There are no significant changes in the Kupyansky sector - artillery duels continue along the entire line of contact.

▪️In the Limansky sector, Ukrainian formations attacked in the direction of Chernopopovka, but failed and retreated under heavy artillery fire.

To the south-west, in Serebryansky forestry, Russian servicemen were able to storm several strongholds of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, simultaneously capturing enemy fighters.

🔻Soledar direction:

▪️In the north-west, Russian forces continue to advance in the area of Bogdanovka in order to finally cut off all routes leading to Bakhmut from Chasov Yar and Konstantinovka.

▪️In Bakhmut itself, detachments of PMC "Wagner" began to storm the Artemovsky metalworking plant. Taking control of the facility is somewhat complicated by bomb shelters and a network of underground utilities on the territory of the enterprise.

▪️In addition, intense fighting continues in the south of the city, as well as in the area of the Bakhmut-Konstantinovka highway.

🔻Donetsk direction:

Russian troops with an accurate artillery strike destroyed the ammunition depot of the Ukrainian army in Novoselovka.

🔻Zaporozhye direction:

The Armed Forces of Ukraine inflicted at least five strikes on the industrial zone and the embankment in Energodar, but they managed to avoid casualties and any serious damage.

At least seven hits were recorded near the industrial zone and the embankment. Emergency services are working at the site.

Russia's hypersonic Kinzhal missile is immune to Ukraine's air defenses — CNN

(CNN)Russia's overnight missile attack on Thursday showered Ukraine with an array of missiles, in one of Moscow's biggest aerial assaults for months.

Nearly half a million people are without power in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, following the latest barrage of strikes, according to the regional governor.

And there are concerns about how effectively Ukraine can stand up to such bombardments.

What missiles are Russia using?

Russia launched a total of 95 missiles of various types over the past day, 34 of which were intercepted, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a morning update on Friday, as well as a number of Iranian-made Shahed drones.

That array included cruise missiles that were launched from both the sea and the air; six different kinds were used in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Valerii Zaluzhnyi, commander in chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Much attention has been focused on the six launches of Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missiles, which are especially difficult to stop.

Is this a new strategy?

The use of so many different weapons systems in one night has increasingly become Russia's preferred method of striking through the skies.

"Over the last six months or so there's been a trend towards larger gaps between missile raids, but more missiles used at once when they do, to make it harder for defenses to intercept them all," Bronk said.

That shift has come as Ukraine's air defenses have become better equipped and more advanced, and as a way of maximizing the impact of each wave of strikes.

"Moscow looks to have been adapting its missile attacks to further complicate the challenge for defenders, with a mix of subsonic cruise missiles, the much higher speed Kinzhal aero-ballistic missiles, and possibly also decoys and other counter-measures," Douglas Barrie, senior fellow for military aerospace at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), said.

The use of hypersonic missiles in particular follows the Kremlin's years-long push to equip its military with such weaponry -- a move that the United States and the West has been less keen to adopt, given the trade-offs in pursuing hypersonic capabilities.

"What you get is a missile that is much harder to intercept and gives your opponent much less warning. What you lose is that it's much more expensive, and often can only be carried by a much more limited number of platforms," Bronk explained.

How effective are Ukraine's air defenses?

Ukraine's air defense systems did not stand up well enough against Russia's nuclear-capable Kinzhal missiles, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky said following Thursday's missile barrage.

"They are using hypersonic missiles. They are using new types of weapons and they are seeing how our air defense systems can cope with it," Rodnyansky told CNN's Isa Soares in an interview, adding, "they are not coping well enough."

Ukraine has adapted to new Russian aerial bombardments in the past, improving their ability to shoot down incoming cruise missiles with surface-to-air defenses and seeing particularly high levels 🤡 of success against Shahed drones.

But the Kinzhal provides a specific challenge: It is immune to Ukraine's air defenses. An air-launched variant of the Iskander short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) which has also, more frequently, been used in Ukraine, the Kinzhal was unveiled by Putin in 2018 as a cornerstone of a modernized Russian arsenal.

"Russia likely developed the unique missile to more easily target critical European infrastructure ... (its) speed, in combination with the missile's erratic flight trajectory and high maneuverability, could complicate interception," according to a CSIS report
