Grain of salt here:
⚡️ (source (https://t.me/militarymaps/33119)) Maarahot , the military magazine of the Israel Defense Forces, published a new analytical text by Israeli Lieutenant Colonel Oren Haas, a lecturer in military arts at the Israeli Reservist Battalion Academy, on the topic of the “Force Protection” function, with a focus on the analysis of the SMO :
Security of forces on the battlefield - the experience of Ukraine
⏺ Five functions for ground forces:
▪️Maneuver
▪️Fire
▪️Intelligence Gathering
▪️Logistics
▪️Command and control
These functions are defined as the main and permanent (!) For any ground forces of the Israel Defense Forces, designed to ensure the synergy of all efforts and the accomplishment of any combat mission. These are methodological functions that help each commander to plan, command and self-reflect (learn).
⏺ Offensive - the essence of the problem
The offensive is one of the most dangerous types of combat, as the commander consciously decides to open his troops, and therefore make them more vulnerable. At the same time, the logistics units on the front line will always be the most vulnerable. Attackers usually rely on personal protection, such as body armor and body armor.
⏺ What is the problem
Already in the 80s, it became clear that the possibilities of land maneuver were limited by modern weapons, such as anti-tank systems and artillery systems, and today all kinds of impact copters have been added to them. Artillery has also become abnormally accurate and it became possible to call for its support in the shortest possible time.
⏺ What should be done
To these five functions, you need to add a sixth, namely, “Protection of Forces”, or, as it is called in the US Army, Force Protection. The AOI has always assumed that this is a self-evident function, but it seems that the time has come to single it out as one of the fundamental ones .
The latest warriors, especially the war in Nagorno-Karabakh and the SMO in Ukraine, show us that it is no longer necessary to treat combat forces as "forces in themselves." Any combat unit needs a separate guard: not only logistics or rear units, but also combat units.
⏺ Lessons of war in Ukraine
Reconnaissance units or other non-linear units were able to deliver accurate strikes against the enemy. While not part of the maneuver effort, they still deal significant damage to the enemy. For example, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have achieved the ability to strike at the advancing formations continuously (!) And constantly.
The old orders and rules for deploying forces and subsequent maneuver are no longer relevant, since everyone strikes (even scouts), and not just “linear” units, which should be part of a land maneuver.
The rear is no longer the rear, and therefore the soldiers' sense of security at staging and deployment points is a false sense. Now the soldier is vulnerable at all levels of the theater of operations.
⏺ The main goal of the function “Protection of forces”:
▪️ Eliminate threats to the unit;
▪️Save its combat capability;
▪️Keep his freedom of action;
▪️Keep his ability to maneuver.
Why is it important to designate “Protection of Forces” precisely as a function
Military functions are the fundamental rules for the execution and operation of combat units. "Protection of forces" should not be a recommendation or taken for granted - it should become just an unshakable rule. Just as missile defense systems protect civilians, the military must be protected in the same way so that they can carry out their tasks.
Not on an individual basis, that is, a trench, a camouflage net, body armor, but precisely in the sense of attracting outside forces for this.
⏺ With what help to protect the forces:
▪️Artillery;
▪️Front air defense;
▪️Combat engineering;
▪️Active and passive protection;
▪️Robotics;
▪️ Synergy of all of the above.
Conclusion
It is necessary to change and adapt as soon as possible, otherwise any advancing units, those who do not take care to secure their battle formations, will face defeat, which we can observe on the battlefields in Ukraine.
Ukrainian media reported on the first use of U.S. JDAM glide bombs by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Vladimir Orlov, an expert at the Center for Military-Political Journalism, told 360 about the features of this ammunition, and also explained how Russian air defense would cope with the threat.
It was expected
What was dropped near Artemovsk is a planning aerial bomb. Apparently, it was a test, they tested the technology. I think there will be several more test drops before the APU will start using this ammunition more widely.
In fact, the supply of JDAM has been known for a long time. So their use is expected.
Until now, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have had the issue of adapting the existing fleet to this type of ammunition. Apparently, American and European engineers solved the problem and figured out how to hang these bombs under the wing of the old Soviet aircraft, which are in service with Ukraine and which Europe collects for them from the bottom of the barrel from all over the world.
They probably resolved the issue with target designation, that is, the introduction of coordinates into the corrective device of the ammunition.
Heaven under control
But now they inevitably have another problem. The peculiarity of a planning bomb is that in order for it to fly its, let's say, "passport data" - 50-70 kilometers, the plane must drop it somewhere from a height of 10-15 kilometers. In this case, he, of course, will fall into the field of view of Russian air defense.
If Ukrainian pilots use JDAM from low altitudes, trying to pass below the line of sight of our air defense radars, then in this case the drop range will not be very large.
If the Armed Forces of Ukraine want to use JDAM to hit targets in the depth of our operational-tactical formation, in this case they will have to fly up at a fairly high altitude. Then, of course, Ukrainian pilots will become the target.

❗️ 🇷🇺🇺🇦 Battle for Bakhmut
situation as of 17.00 March 12, 2023
🔻In the north-west of Bakhmut , after the first unsuccessful attempt to attack the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Orekhovo-Vasilevka, assault detachments of the PMC "Wagner" broke through the defenses of Ukrainian formations through the fields south of the village.
▪️As the sources of the Military Chronicle @milchronicles suggest, the settlement itself consists of four well-fortified strongholds. At the moment, confident control has been established over two , on the third and fourth there is a sweep. Near the village cemetery, 30 people from the 30th brigade and 116th troop brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were killed.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are unsuccessfully trying to recapture the lost territories. Ukrainian formations suffer losses due to difficulties with the evacuation of the wounded, the lack of reconnaissance and logistics support, and insufficiently intensive fire support - mortar and artillery crews have a limit on the consumption of ammo.
At the same time, several attacks have already been carried out by forces of the 1st detachment of special forces of the 71st Jaeger brigade, with the support of a tank platoon of the 4th detachment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As a result of the fighting, the "Wagnerites" destroyed two tanks , and only one 71st brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost about 120 people killed and wounded in two days.
▪️Now the Ukrainian formations have retreated to the Golubovka area, the seriously wounded are being transported to Slavyansk and Liman . From Minkovka , Golubovka and Privolye, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are shelling the Wagner offensive areas with artillery and mortars.
🔻In the south-west of Bakhmut, PMC assault units approached close to the highway to Konstantinovka . The attack on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is taking place on the sections of the Konstantinovka-Krasnoe and Krasnoe-Bakhmut roads. To support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a mortar battery was transferred to Konstantinovka from Slavyansk.
▪️Also, Russian units advanced slightly in the Budenovsky district in the south of Bakhmut, improving their tactical position and leveling the front line.
❗️Advancement to the northwest along the Slavyanskaya highway allows expanding the buffer zone near Bakhmut and protecting the flanks from counterattacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Slavic-Kramatorsk agglomeration has accumulated large reserves, which, under certain circumstances, can be thrown into battle to pin down Russian fighters .
In addition, movement in this direction creates the prospect of a further offensive in two directions: to encircle the Seversk agglomeration , which, together with the activation of 144 motorized rifle divisions in Serebryansky forestry , is very logical, and also to bypass the large fortified area in Chasov Yar .
The city is located on the dominant heights relative to the areas from which the "Wagnerites" are now advancing. A frontal attack is extremely dangerous due to the terrain, and an attack on Chasov Yar will be like attacking Ugledar from the lowlands.
The simultaneous advance to the north with successes in the south of Bakhmut and south-west of the city fetters the formations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in one area, which, given the shortage of ammunition among Ukrainian artillerymen, allows us to develop success.
