…The long and short of it is that, while the US and NATO can fight a short conflict, neither can support a long war because there’s insufficient equipment in the now-depleted inventory and the timelines to build replacement hardware are long.
Despite a history of having done so before, starting in 1939, there is little chance that the US today can put in place a surge capacity, or that it any longer knows how to do so if it is even feasible…
…Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, who took over as Chief of the Defence Staff in November 2021, said even replacing less sophisticated weapons sent to Ukraine could take “several years” due to constraints on the UK’s industrial capacity.
Answering questions from the Lords International Relations and Defence Committee on Wednesday, Admiral Radakin also said it could take “five to 10 years” before the UK could deploy a division with the capabilities to fight alongside US forces.
He said: “We could throw out a division now, but it’s not the one we would want.”…
…More telling, however, is what the numbers say about NATO’s combat strength versus Russia. If NATO is being asked to empty its armory to keep Ukraine in the game, one must consider the losses suffered by Ukraine up to that point and that Russia appears able to sustain its current level of combat activity indefinitely. That’s right — Russia just destroyed the equivalent of NATO’s main active-duty combat power and hasn’t blinked….
…The rate of ammunition and equipment consumption in Ukraine can only be sustained by a large-scale industrial base.
This reality should be a concrete warning to Western countries, who have scaled down military industrial capacity and sacrificed scale and effectiveness for efficiency. This strategy relies on flawed assumptions about the future of war, and has been influenced by both the bureaucratic culture in Western governments and the legacy of low-intensity conflicts….

I very much appreciate the compilation of information, maps, and reports. A request, if possible: I very much DO NOT like graphic pictures of corpses; they are simply too gruesome for me.. I understand that they are important pieces of reality, however...is it possible to arrange this blog so that the Part I: Information; basic information and non-graphic materiel comes first, and them a written warning such as Part II: 'Graphic materiel below'. That way I could read the information and even see images and videos that don't have corpses, and then I could stop before the second half of the blog, where all the graphic photos of dead/burned/mutilated soldiers could be. I know it is extra work, but it would make the blog much more palatable to people like me. Thank you for your work and sharing these 'alternative facts'
