Highlights of Russian Military Operation in Ukraine on August 22

▪️For the fifth day in a row, AFU use drones to attack Moscow.

Air defense units intercepted two drones: one in Chastsy, the second in Krasnogorsk. A residential building and cars were damaged by the blast wave.

▪️Russian fighters found several Ukrainian boats with landing groups in the Black Sea.

The aircraft crews promptly destroyed the enemy's watercrafts with automatic cannon fire.

▪️A Ukrainian sabotage-reconnaissance group tried to break through the state border in Bryansk region.

Russian units immediately identified and liquidated the enemy group.

▪️In Kup'yans'k sector, Russian troops continue to attack the enemy's defensive lines in Sin'kivka and south of Vil'shana.

The offensive is complicated by the fact that the terrain is located in a lowland relative to the AFU positions on the right bank of the Oskil River.

▪️In Vremivka sector, the enemy continues to regroup and attack Russian positions south of Urozhaine.

The Russian troops manage to reveal the AFU advance in a timely manner and hit them with artillery strikes.

▪️In Orikhiv sector, the enemy does not abandon attempts to storm Robotyne.

When the powerful brigade finally rolled into action with some of its 14 British-made Challenger 2 tanks, 40 ex-German Marder tracked infantry fighting vehicles and 90 Stryker wheeled IFVs, it immediately began losing vehicles.

This week, the 82nd wrote off at least two of its 20 or so M1132 Engineer Squad Vehicles—mineclearing versions of its 18-ton, eight-wheel Stryker infantry-carriers. The M1132 features a set of hull-mounted minerollers that can detonate buried mines before the vehicle triggers them.

It’s unclear what struck the M1132s and whether the crews survived. It’s possible the vehicle were victims of the same mines their crews were trying to clear. It’s also possible they got caught in artillery barrages or were hunted down by drones. In any event, the 82nd already has lost 10 percent of its mineclearing Strykers.

The lead unit for the Robotyne assault, the Ukrainian army’s 47th Mechanized Brigade, by then had lost at least 25 of its 99 American-made M-2 tracked infantry fighting vehicles. The 82nd Brigade apparently joined the fight in order to bolster the flagging 47th.

It should come as no surprise that the two M1132s are the 82nd’s first confirmed losses. The brigade likely is sending M1132s ahead of its main assault columns in order to clear lanes through Russian minefields around Robotyne. With safe paths through the mines, the 82nd’s Strykers, Marders and Challenger 2s can push deeper into Robotyne, or bypass and cut off the city’s Russian garrison.

Here’s the good news. The United States has pledged 189 Strykers to Ukraine’s war effort—more than enough to replace the 82nd’s losses and equip additional brigades. And if those 189 Strykers run out, no problem: the U.S. Army has hundreds more Strykers in storage.

▫️ In the Kupyansk direction, the assault detachments of the Zapad Group of Forces carried out offensive actions in the assigned areas of responsibility and improved the tactical situation.

▫️ With the support of aviation, artillery fire, and heavy flamethrowers, 4 attacks by assault groups of the 67th, Mechanised, 68th Jaeger, 25th Airborne, and 95th Air Assault brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were repelled close to Sinkovka (Kharkov), Novoyegorovka, and Novosyolovskoye LPR.

▫️ The enemy's losses in this direction during the day amounted to up to 170 servicemen, a tank, 5 AFVs, 3 pick-up trucks, 1 M777 artillery system, as well as 1 D-20 howitzer.

▫️ In Zaporozhye direction, 4 attacks of the AFU 65th Mechanised Brigade near Rabotino (Zaporozhye) were repelled during the day.

▫️ Up to 80 servicemen, 4 motor vehicles, 1 Krab and 1 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled artillery systems, 1 D-30 gun, 3 M119 howitzer, and 1 AN/TPQ-48 counter-battery radiation station have been neutralised.

▫️ In Donetsk direction, units of the Yug Group of Forces repelled 3 attacks by Ukrainian Armed Forces near Nevelskoye, Mayorsk, and Kurdyumovka DPR. The enemy has suffered losses of up to 180 servicemen, 3 AFVs, 3 motor vehicles, 1 Gvozdika and one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery systems, and D-30 and D-20 howitzers in this direction in the past 24 hours.

◽️ In Krasny Liman direction, the Tsentr Group of Forces' units inflicted losses on the units of AFU 21st Mechanised Brigade and 5th National Guard Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine close to Yampolovka DPR and Chervonaya Dibrova LPR. During the day in this direction, the enemy suffered losses of up to 60 servicemen, 2 AFVs, 2 pick-up trucks, and 1 D-30 howitzer.

◽️ In South Donetsk direction, aviation and artillery of the Vostok Group of Forces inflicted fire damage on clusters of AFU manpower and hardware close to Staromayorskoye and Urozhaynoye DPR. In addition, 2 SRG were disabled near Rovnopol DPR.

◽️ The enemy's losses amounted to up to 145 servicemen killed and wounded, 1 tank, as well as 1 M109 Paladin self-propelled artillery system during the day.

◽️ In Kherson direction, up to 20 servicemen, 3 motor vehicles, and 1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer were destroyed by enemy fire.

▫️ Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Group of Forces have engaged AFU manpower and hardware in 143 areas during the day. A P-18 radar for detecting and tracking air targets was neutralised near Zaporozhye.

▫️ 2 command posts of the AFU 67th Mechanised and 81st Airmobile brigades was eliminated close to Serebryanka and Dronovka DPR.

▫️ Russian air defence forces have intercepted 1 HIMARS MLRS projectile during the day.

◽️ Moreover, 18 UAVs were shot down close to Shipilovka, Privolye, Makeyevka LPR, Berestovoye, Kurdyumovka DPR, Chistopolye, Lyubimovka, Mirnoye, and Inzhenernoye (Zaporozhye).
