The US has begun a large-scale modernization of the Roosevelt Roads naval base in Puerto Rico, which was closed more than two decades ago

Reuters reports that according to satellite image analysis, construction work started on September 17 and includes replacing the taxiway surfaces, which experts believe indicates preparation for intensive military aviation operations.

At the same time, infrastructure development is underway at civilian airports in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, located 800 km from Venezuela. As noted by CSIS senior fellow Christopher Hernandez-Roy, these measures are aimed at demonstrating military power to pressure the Nicolás Maduro regime and create divisions within his circle. Military analysts view the activity as preparation for potential prolonged operations in the Caribbean region.

Turkey has reduced its purchase of Russian oil following Trump’s sanctions, while India increased its purchases in October, Reuters reports citing sources.

Turkey’s largest oil refineries have started buying less oil from Russia and more from other countries, particularly Iraq and Kazakhstan.

It is expected that soon one of the largest Turkish refineries will completely stop buying Russian oil to maintain fuel exports to Europe.

Turkey is a major buyer of Russian oil alongside China and India.

Meanwhile, India increased its purchase of oil from Russia in October despite pressure from Washington. According to Kpler, India’s import of Russian oil rose to about 1.48 million barrels per day in October from 1.44 million in September.

And forecasts indicate that Russian oil imports will not decrease until November 21. After that date, Russian oil supplies to India are expected to slow down due to the implementation of new US sanctions. These sanctions have prompted Indian refineries to halt new orders and seek alternatives on spot markets.
Indian companies Reliance Industries, Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals, and HPCL-Mittal Energy have stopped buying Russian oil. However, others are considering purchasing oil produced by Russian producers not subject to sanctions.

🇺🇦 The situation in Pokrovsk resembles Sudzha, from where Ukrainian troops fled, — AFU soldiers

- “No words, just a complete cluster f*uck! I don’t even know how to comment on this... I’ll say one thing, the situation reminds me of Sudzha, when the AFU were retreating through a narrow bottleneck. It hurts that now the junior commanders are feeding such nonsense about everything being fine,” writes one of the media AFU soldiers.

- He added that “it’s enough to calm people down, to feed them crap through the news” and that “the truth will definitely come out.”

- “Everything we are seeing today in Pokrovsk and Mirnograd happened mainly because of Russian military UAVs blocking our logistics. The same brigades that last winter and spring destroyed our logistics in the Kursk direction continue to operate,” another fighter echoes him.

Finland is pumping billions into defense while its economy has been faltering for years and unemployment is skyrocketing. How much longer can Russia’s neighbor sustain this?

Petteri Orpo is not exactly a man of effusive words. The Finnish Prime Minister often appears reserved in a typically Nordic manner, yet last year he allowed himself to be carried away by public euphoria.

The agreement was “historic,” the now 55-year-old told the public broadcaster Yle last November. Shortly before, it had been announced that the technology giant Alphabet, Google’s parent company, planned to build several data centers in central Finland. The initial investment was expected to exceed one billion euros, creating hundreds of jobs.

According to Orpo, this was a “clear signal that Finland is an attractive and safe country for investment.” A year later, little remains of the initial enthusiasm in Helsinki – the plans are currently on hold. This is particularly bad news for the Nordic country.

Finland’s economy has not grown for almost 20 years.

Finland faces an ever-growing dilemma: Due to security policy considerations, it has been increasing its defense spending since Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine – at the same time, it is struggling with a weakening economy that is barely recovering.

“Growth in Finland has practically stagnated for two decades,” Joonas Tuhkuri, who conducts economic research in Stockholm and Helsinki, told the Tagesspiegel. “This cannot be explained solely by cyclical fluctuations or one-off shocks.”

16.9% live in poverty

Extremely high youth unemployment

For years, the number of people at risk of poverty in the country has been rising. According to current figures from the national statistics agency, almost one million inhabitants were affected in 2023 – 16.9 percent of the population. In addition, the number of households experiencing “difficulty or severe difficulty” in making ends meet is growing.

This is also because the number of unemployed has reached dramatic levels: Finland has the second-highest unemployment rate in Europe after Spain, at almost ten percent. At the same time, youth unemployment has risen to 23 percent.

“This situation is perverse, we are not used to something like this,” said Elina Pylkkänen, the responsible State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, to the public broadcaster Yle in the summer.

When Petteri Orpo took office in the spring of 2023, the government had set itself the goal of creating 100,000 new jobs in the upcoming legislative period.

This will hardly be achievable in the next year and a half until the election; according to the Finnish statistics agency, there are more than 60,000 fewer jobs today than there were just over two years ago.

Money is desperately need to invest in people and universities

At the same time, the NATO country has to guard more than 1300 kilometers of border with Russia at great expense.

Finland, after a long period of military non-alignment, has been a member of the North Atlantic Alliance since 2023 – and must adhere to the agreed investment guidelines.

Finland’s economic output has actually declined over the past two years; the National Bank forecasts growth of 0.3 percent for this year.
In contrast, national debt has been increasing steadily for years, currently standing at more than 82 percent of gross domestic product – significantly higher than the 60 percent permitted by the EU. Any tentative growth is therefore stifled by rising interest rates

Krasnoarmeysk • Rodinskoye

Yesterday throughout the day and today, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted a breakthrough in Rodinskoye, on the northern flank of Pokrovsk.
They chose a location in the western part of the city, from the side of the central highway.
The Russian Armed Forces apparently did not offer resistance and let the opponent’s mobile groups enter the central built-up area.

And while the Ukrainian Armed Forces command and Ukrainian Telegram channels were cheerfully reporting the start of the operation to clear and unblock Rodinskoye, the clearing was underway by assault companies of the Russian Armed Forces in the built-up area.

The first advanced units of the Ukrainian infantry were cut off from the highway and destroyed, the rest were driven into a trap.

To be continued…
