Ukraine's final counteroffensive in 2023 was supposed to end the war , — NYT
▪️In 2023, Kyiv and its allies hoped that a major counteroffensive would be the final chapter of the war: the Ukrainians would achieve absolute victory, or Putin would be forced to sue for peace. But things did not go according to plan.
▪️American generals advised to take a break, strengthen the army and accumulate resources - but Kiev chose to attack. The main direction was to be a strike on Melitopol in order to cut off Crimea , but at the last moment the Ukrainian leadership changed the agreed plan and decided to attack in three directions at once, without informing the allies.
▪️Part of the trained brigades and ammunition went not to the south, but to storm Bakhmut - and the offensive petered out.
▪️After the unsuccessful offensive , trust between Kiev and its allies weakened: “it was no longer the inspired and trusting brotherhood of 2022.”
