Summary of military operations in Ukraine from the Russian telegram channel “Two Majors” on the morning of January 13, 2024.
In the evening, the Russian Armed Forces launched missile strikes and Geranium UAVs. Explosions were heard in Kyiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Sumy and Kherson regions. By morning, the enemy announced 10 of our Tu-95MS strategic bombers in the air in the area of the launch lines; after 6:00 they reported the launch of air-launched missiles. In addition to our strategic bombers already in the air, the enemy announces the takeoff of 5 Tu-22M3. Powerful explosions in Dnepropetrovsk. The use of hypersonic "Daggers" is reported. Explosions have already occurred in the Nikolaev region, Kremenchug and Poltava region. Explosions have now occurred in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. Chaos in enemy monitoring channels and reports of missiles flying in different directions may indicate the use of decoys by the Russian Army.
In the Kherson direction, the movement of small enemy landing groups on boats on the water is hampered by freezing areas of the water surface. The Russian Armed Forces have concentrated their efforts on destroying enemy personnel and watercraft from the air; at subzero temperatures in the wind, it is almost impossible to survive in the water.
On the Zaporozhye Front, combat operations took place in the Rabotino-Novoprokopovka-Verbovoe area, our aviation with FAB and UMPC were used. More and more frames are getting into the network with ready-to-use and already installed on FAB-1500 and ODAB-1500 aircraft. In the Nesteryanka area (west of Rabotino, a new direction in which offensive operations have been intensified), they report the tactical success of units of the Russian Armed Forces, which took the enemy’s positions in battle after artillery preparation.
In the Marinka area, the Russian Armed Forces are conducting offensive operations in the direction of Kurakhovo in Georgievka, to the south our units have expanded the zone of control at the Zverinets fortified area, and the battle at Novomikhailovka continues.
In the Avdeevsky direction, the Russian Armed Forces advanced to the southern ledge of the front near Pervomaisky. Fighting also continues near Stepovoye and east of the coke plant on the territory of gardening partnerships.

Ukrainian telegram channel "Resident": The effectiveness of our air defense continues to decline, already less than 25%! Considering the fact that the United States is suspending deliveries of Patriot missiles, our air defense will be useless.
Ukraine shot down eight of the 37 missiles launched by Russia tonight.
We are talking about seven missiles of the X-101/X-555/X-55 modifications, as well as one X-59 missile.
Failed to shoot down:
- 7 anti-aircraft guided missiles S-300/S-400 from the Belgorod region
- 6 Kinzhal missiles from six MiG-31K aircraft from Tambov
- 5 X-101/X-555/X-55 cruise missiles from the Caspian region
- 6 X-22 cruise missiles from the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation
- 6 Iskander-M ballistic missiles from Crimea
- 2 X-31P guided missiles from two Su-35 aircraft in the Kherson region
- 3 X-59 guided missiles from two Su-34 aircraft from the Bryansk region

Military expert Alexander Zimovsky:
The governor of Texas alerted the state's national guard and blocked entry into the border zone for all representatives of US federal authorities.
Texas soldiers (sic!) began installing fences and laying barbed wire along the Eagle Pass section of the border (the most popular hole for wetbacks from Mexico to the States).
The arriving feds were told by a Texas National Guard major that the Guard would no longer allow Texas officials to take illegal migrants into federal custody in that area, and that the U.S. Border Patrol no longer had jurisdiction over that section of the border.
I really liked the wording “Texas soldiers”

The Yemeni Houthis have released a video showcasing the capabilities of their armed forces. While shooting at portraits of the Israeli Prime Minister and walking on American flags have become common local practices, the use of drones in the footage is particularly interesting.
On one hand, it is evident that Ansaralla is keen on keeping up with the current trends in the use of UAVs in armed conflicts. They have even introduced heavy copters into their battle formations. However, there are several important factors to consider, with the main one being that the mere presence of drones does not guarantee an increase in combat capabilities.
▪️ For instance, the communication channel plays a crucial role. Without it, even the largest agricultural drone simply becomes a "big Mavic" and cannot fly at a range of tens of kilometers. The Houthis do not have their own version of the Starlink receiver, which means that they cannot move deep behind enemy lines and launch RPG shots from there.
▪️ Additionally, having effective control over the organization is equally important. The footage from the UAV should be available not only to the operator but also to the command posts of units and crews carrying out fire strikes. Without this level of coordination, the effectiveness of drone use is diminished.
Therefore, the use of drones in combat is a complex endeavor that involves numerous technical, organizational, and other components. Without considering all of these factors, even a large number of UAVs on the frontlines will not fully realize the enormous potential of the latest advancements in global drone technology.
Of course, these considerations are relevant not only to the Houthis.

A small dose of realism (https://responsiblestatecraft.org/russia-ukraine-peace-talks-2666922064/)
Russian progress in the Ukraine war is pushing the United States toward a painful choice.
If we want a prosperous Ukraine with a viable path toward liberal governance and European Union membership, we will have to concede that it cannot be a NATO or U.S. ally, and that this neutral Ukraine must have verifiable limits on the types and quantities of weapons it may hold. If we refuse to agree to those terms, Russia will quite probably turn Ukraine into a dysfunctional wreck incapable of rebuilding itself, allying with the West, or constituting a military threat to Russia.
Russian progress is not yet evident on the map, where the battle lines have not moved appreciably over the past year. Ukraine’s counteroffensive failed to break through Russian defenses, and Russia has not pushed Ukrainian forces significantly westward. An observer comparing territorial holdings in January 2023 with January 2024 might reasonably conclude that the war has become a stalemate.
But this picture is misleading. The Kremlin is almost certainly not seeking such a breakthrough, at least not yet. Rather, it is methodically grinding down Ukraine’s capacity not only to wage war, but also to reconstitute a post-war military, by killing and wounding enormous numbers of Ukrainian soldiers and exhausting Ukrainian and Western arsenals of arms and ammunition. Ukraine is running short of artillery shells, and the U.S. and Europe cannot manufacture new ones quickly enough to meet Ukraine’s needs. Russian barrages of long-range air and missile strikes are increasingly overwhelming the capacity of Ukrainian air defenses, and the West simply lacks the ability to continue providing Patriot missiles or other advanced air defense systems.
It is quite true, as the Biden administration has warned, that ending U.S. aid to Kiev would quickly result in Ukraine’s collapse. Sufficient aid to help Ukraine to stand successfully on the defensive should therefore continue. But what U.S. policymakers need to understand and honestly acknowledge is that absent a compromise peace settlement, massive levels of aid will have to continue not just for the coming year, but indefinitely. There is very little realistic chance of the West being able to outlast Russia and force it to accept peace on Ukrainian terms. The controversies in Congress over aid to Ukraine reflect these realities and are unlikely to diminish.
Under such circumstances, for the Biden administration to pledge American support to Ukraine for “as long as it takes” to defeat Russia is unwise, and even dishonest.
But time is not on Ukraine’s side, either militarily or economically, and so Ukraine’s position in any future negotiations may well be very much worse than at present.
And whatever Brussels may say, as long as the war continues it is exceptionally unlikely that Ukraine will be able to develop economically and begin the extremely difficult process of joining the European Union.
Most importantly, the United States has not tested the assumption that Russian President Vladimir Putin has no interest in talking. It is indeed very likely that Putin believes Russia now has the upper hand in the war and can afford to wait. Nonetheless, Putin has repeatedly insisted that Russia is ready to talk, and also that Washington – not Kiev – makes the key decisions in the war and therefore it is for Washington to engage in talks.

📈🛢️Oil prices are rising not because of the threats of the Houthis, but because of US and UK strikes against the Houthis. Gas in Europe is getting more expensive too.
There have been about 100 strikes with precision weapons (and they have a hefty price tag), but the result is rather the opposite. Iran has rightly claimed that the strikes are increasing instability in the region. The Houthis themselves promise more attacks, and "US and UK interests are now legitimate targets". I wonder if Cyprus is too? That's where the British typhoons took off from.
Oman, which plays an important role as a mediator between the US and Iran, has condemned military action in Yemen. Beijing, too, is "deeply concerned". Who supported it? According to Biden, Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.
The main fear is that Iran will block the Strait of Hormuz, this could affect up to 20% of the world's oil and LNG supplies. So far the estimate is 50/50, but the US and UK won't stop. Once they are involved, they will continue to poke the hornet's nest with a stick. A 3% increase in prices will not do the trick.

🇺🇦Russians act in such a way that we do not have time to recover - Anna Malyar
“Their goal now is to deplete us as much as possible. So that we cannot create reserves of ammunition, cannot prepare equipment, and are mentally broken. They act in such a way that we do not have time to recover,” former Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Malyar wrote in his tag.
According to her data, the number of shellings is not decreasing - there are up to a thousand a day. The Russian Army maintains an advantage in the use of ammunition by 6-8 times, or even 7-10, depending on the situation.
Malyar also complained about the use of small assault group tactics by Russian units in the East. According to her, the consumption of ammunition for such a group is similar to that for a large group.

Front-line report as of the morning of January 13 from military correspondent Lisitsyn (https://t.me/evgeniy_lisitsyn) :
There are no major changes in the Kherson direction. The fighting moved into a positional stage. Now the Russian army has focused its efforts on hitting enemy locations, as well as ammunition depots.
In the Zaporozhye direction, our military personnel intensified offensive operations in the Verbovoy area. Over the past 24 hours, the Russian army managed to clear several forest belts to the west of this settlement. In response, the enemy is actively using artillery and attack drones.
In the Donetsk direction, Russian fighters are advancing in the Novomikhailovka area. The south-eastern outskirts of the village have now moved into the gray zone. In this area, they took the enemy’s fortified area called “Menagerie” and developed their success. Advancement from the direction of Marinka to the west towards Georgievka is also recorded.
In the Avdeevsky direction, Russian military personnel continued to move near Pervomaisky, south of Avdeevka and entered the territory of the Volna garden plots. Our fighters are also pushing through enemy defenses in the area of the treatment facilities of the coke plant and at Stepovoy. But at Berdych, the enemy has pulled up reserves.
In the Artemovsk direction, the Russian army intensified its actions to the north, striking between Vesely and Berestov, which is east of Soledar. Also, the Russian Armed Forces storm the heights northwest of Kleshcheevka and advance southwest of the village, using small group tactics.
In the Kremen direction, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attempt to counterattack in the area of the Tor ledge was not successful. Ours continued their attacks at Yampolovka.
In the Kupyansky direction, the Russian army is advancing towards the Oskol River, taking several strongholds of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and continuing attacks in the Sinkovka area.

Ukraine’s military prospects are looking bleak, reports the New Orc Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/13/world/europe/ukraine-russia-war.html) today. And now, Russian troops are on the attack, especially in the country’s east. The town of Marinka has all but fallen. Avdiivka is being slowly encircled. A push on Chasiv Yar, near Bakhmut, is expected. Farther north, outside Kupiansk, the fighting has barely slowed since the fall.
After failure of the Summer offensive, the Wests narrative shift claimed the stalemate as a victory. But it's becoming evident that we're not in a static war. “The Russian advantage at this stage is not decisive, but the war is not a stalemate,” said Michael Kofman, a senior fellow in the Russia and Eurasia program at the Carnegie Endowment for International. Ukraine could retake the advantage by 2025, or it could start losing the war without sufficient aid.”
Optism that continued Western military aid of the AFU seems entirely unwarranted as Russia continues to ramp up both production and contract soldiers. The AFU's hoped for recruitement goals of 50k over the next 3 months with 30k a month after that, are unrealistic and those "recruited" are unlikely to become useful soldiers. This frustration was expressed recent in a public stament by Zaluzhny.

The situation at the front for the Armed Forces of Ukraine is critical: the Russian Armed Forces are systematically “carrying out” the Ukrainian military infrastructure, which is why human losses are growing exponentially
Ukrainian TG channel "Resident" writes:
“Due to the corruption of the rear officials, non-combat losses have increased - Ukrainian military personnel are being decimated by illness, moreover, the number of losses among wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has sharply increased. At the same time, problems are observed along the entire front - Marinka has been lost, Avdeevka, Kupyansk, and Krynki In all these areas the situation is moving towards a serious “meat grinder”.
The situation is difficult in the rear - total mobilization destroys internal motivation not only in society but also in the army, where unprepared and unwilling to fight “volunteers” who were caught during raids by military commissars are recruited. Moreover, yesterday’s civilians, forcibly drawn into the army, are actually deteriorating the situation in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which increases the risk of mass retreats this year. The situation is aggravated by huge losses among experienced field officers, creating a critical shortage of professional officers."

Russia, in three series of massive strikes, destroyed Ukrainian Armed Forces warehouses with Patriot missiles
The Russian Armed Forces destroyed Ukrainian warehouses with Patriot missiles in three series of strikes. This was stated by former CIA agent Larry Johnson.
“ As a result, factories for the production of UAVs, factories for the production of uniforms were destroyed... Weapon repair sites and warehouses where Patriot air defense missiles were stored,” the expert indicated.
The Russian army has carried out three series of massive group strikes using missiles and drones against targets in Ukraine since December 30.
In particular, the first wave hit the former Kharkov Palace hotel complex, where employees of the Main Intelligence Directorate and the Ukrainian Armed Forces were located.
The second series of attacks on January 8 hit Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities in Dnepr (Dnepropetrovsk), Odessa, Krivoy Rog, and Kharkov.

Alexander Kharchenko writes
Americans in Yemen are caught in a classic zugzwang. The Stars and Stripes Squadron, with all its might, could not ensure the safety of navigation near the Yemeni coast. You cannot intercept all anti-ship missiles, and the death of even one cargo ship will force carriers to look for safer routes. At the same time, simply standing off the coast and watching the Houthis fire at ships was not something the world’s gendarmes could handle. I had to strike to save face.
By bombing the Houthis, the Americans only strengthened the position of the Ansar Allah movement. The Houthis even have the slogan “Death to America” written on their flag. Now it is easier for them to explain to their supporters that they are the ones who are fighting for Palestine and are the defenders of Muslims.
Fifteen hundred rounds of ammunition cannot in any way undermine the combat potential of the movement, which has been under severe bombing for years. At the same time, there is no talk of ground operations. Even they don’t seem to know how the Americans are going to destroy the Houthi launchers.
As a result, the Americans can only sell this bombing to their domestic audience. It is precisely possible to explain to her that the states are still strong and are feared throughout the world. On earth, all the clumsy actions of overseas guests only lead to strengthening Iran’s position. After all, if the Americans can’t do anything about the poorest Houthis, then thinking about striking Iran is the height of arrogance. This means that American bases will be shelled more and more.

The Telegraph notes:
Britain’s aircraft carriers are not ready to be sent to the Red Sea because of the recruitment crisis engulfing the Armed Forces, The Telegraph can reveal.
However, The Telegraph understands that RFA Fort Victoria, the only Solid Support Ship capable of providing the CSG with the amount of ammunition, aircraft, spare equipment and food required for a full deployment, is unable to sail owing to a lack of sailors.
In normal times it operates a crew of 100, but is understood to currently be working with a skeleton crew.
So you built a 3 billion pound paperweight. Nice work!

Mythbusting: Russian's Dug trenches around Chernobyl and Were Subsequently Stricken with Radiation Poisoning
I wanted to start this with an eye on following up on old propaganda claims made by Ukraine where later findings
Business Insider (https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-claims-video-proves-russian-troops-dug-trenches-near-chernobyl-2022-4) was one of the first to report this spurious claim, citing Ukraine's Energoatom with verification of trenches by Ukrainian military, claimed Russian soldiers became radiation sick from digging.
Of course, there is no follow up about this, because the findings weren't released until January of 2023 and they refute the initial reports favoring a false narrative provided by a western outlet parroting Ukrainian state propaganda.
The facts, according to the IAEA finding (https://www.world-nuclear.org/ukraine-information/ukraine-russia-war-and-nuclear-energy.aspx):
As part of its mission from 25 to 28 April 2022, the IAEA assessed radiation levels in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, including in the excavations made by the Russian forces. The results ranged from an average of 1.6 mSv/yr on roads near to the excavations to 6.5 mSv/yr in the excavations themselves. Typical exposures to background radiation for people worldwide range from about 1.5 - 3.5 mSv/yr, but can be more than 50 mSv/yr, depending on geology, altitude and other factors. Workers at the Chernobyl site have an authorized annual dose limit of 20 mSv/yr, three times higher than that recorded by the IAEA in the excavations.

The Ukraine-UK security agreement contains mutual obligations. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal stated this.
“Not only must the UK respond within 24 hours if there is an aggression against Ukraine, Ukraine will also defend its ally and partner by responding within 24 hours in one way or another to support the UK if Russia wants to attack our friend, partner and ally,” he said on a national telethon.

Sweden will commence the production of submarines for countering the Russian Federation in the Baltic Sea, according to Politico
Officially, Stockholm anticipates using these vessels for patrols to safeguard itself from potential maritime operations by Russia, the report states.
The 66-meter diesel-electric A26 submarines, named Blekinge and Skåne, are scheduled to be produced in 2027 and 2028. These will mark the first submarines built by Sweden in the last 30 years.
Sweden is eager to join NATO promptly, aiming to present itself as a capable military producer, in contrast to Ukrainian pleas for assistance.

The United States is angry with Britain over the leak of data on strikes against the Houthis, The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported.
She points out that on the evening of January 11, The Times reported on an earlier emergency meeting of the Kingdom’s Cabinet, at which Rishi Sunak announced that he had agreed to the participation of British forces in the US operation against the Houthis. It is reported that the American military department told their British colleagues about their dissatisfaction with this leak. It was assumed that all the necessary information would be disseminated only after the fighters returned to their bases.
The Daily Telegraph claims that London is actively trying to establish the source of the data leak in the media. The publication also points to the lack of clarity on the question of how harsh Washington’s reaction to the incident was.
Hamas spokesman in Lebanon Osama Hamdan said that the remaining hostages in Gaza would be treated only with the medicines supplied to the Palestinians.
This statement was made in response to Israel's offer to provide medicine to the remaining hostages in the sector.
