AP: Houthi attacks drag US Navy into its most intense battle since World War II

The Yemeni rebel group's offensives have affected more than 50 ships, the agency says, citing US commanders and experts.

The conflict between the US Navy and the Yemeni Houthis is the most intense ongoing naval battle for Washington since World War II, AP reports, citing US commanders and experts.

The article reports that the Houthis launch missiles, drones or carry out other attacks "almost every day" in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

AP writes that the US Navy "tries to keep international waterways open." "Since November, almost daily attacks by the Houthis have clearly affected more than 50 ships, while shipping volumes have fallen in the vital Red Sea corridor, which leads to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean," it says.

AP indicates that "all signs" show that the attacks will intensify, "putting American sailors, their allies and commercial ships in greater danger."

Meanwhile, Bryan Clark, former US Navy submariner and researcher at the Hudson Institute (Washington D.C.), declared that this is the "most sustained combat the US Navy has seen since World War II." "We are on the verge of the Houthis being able to mount the kind of attacks that the US cannot stop at all times, and then we will start to see substantial damage," the expert said, adding that the rebel group could become " a much more capable, competent and experienced force.

In that context, the commander of the destroyer USS Laboon, Eric Blomberg, said that people do not really understand the severity of the threat that ships face in the Red Sea. "You only have to make a mistake once," he added.

Houthi forces have been attacking vessels in the Red Sea area for months, including ships from the US, the UK and Israel, in protest against Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip.

They maintain that they will maintain these military operations until "the aggression and siege on the Palestinian people in Gaza cease."

The AFU losses amounted to up to 500 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, nine motor vehicles, one 122-mm D-30 howitzer, and three Nota electronic warfare stations.

▫️Units of the Yug Group of Forces improved the situation along the front line, inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of AFU 22nd, 54th mechanised, 46th airmobile brigades near Ulakly, Belaya Gora, Orekhovo-Vasilyovka, Grigorovka, Chasov Yar, Andreyevka, Kurdyumovka, and Kurakhovo (Donetsk People's Republic).

Four counter-attacks launched by units of AFU 33rd, 41st mechanised, and 114th territorial defence brigades were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 380 Ukrainian troops, one German-made Leopard tank, two Kozak armoured fighting vehicles, 15 motor vehicles, two 152-mm D-20 howitzers, two 105-mm Msta-B howitzers, and two U.S.-made 105-mm M119 guns.

▫️The Tsentr Group of Forces' units improved the tactical situation and defeated units of AFU 124th infantry, 25th airborne, 24th, 47th mechanised brigades close to Vozdvizhenka, Novgorodskoye, Novoaleksandrovka, Novopokorskoye, Karlovka, Novosyolovka Pervaya, Sokol, and Kamyshevka (Donetsk People's Republic).

Four counter-attacks launched by units of AFU 23rd, 110th mechanised, and 68th jaeger brigades were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 375 Ukrainian troops, two infantry fighting vehicles, two U.S.-made Humvee and MaxxPro armoured fighting vehicles, two motor vehicles, one 155-mm U.S.-made M777 howitzer, three 152-mm 2A65 Msta-B howitzer, five 122-mm D-30 howitzers, and one 105-mm U.S.-made M119 gun.

▫️The Vostok Group of Forces' units liberated Zagornoye (Zaporozhye region) and captured more advantageous lines.

Strikes were delivered at manpower and hardware of AFU 58th mechanised infantry, 123rd territorial defence, and 15th national guard brigades near Novosyolovka (Zaporozhye region), Urozhaynoye, and Vladimirovka (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 135 Ukrainian troops, one armoured fighting vehicle, four motor vehicles, one 155-mm AS-90 Braveheart self-propelled artillery system, one UK-made 155-mm FH-70 howitzer, as well as two Bukovel-AD electronic warfare stations.

▫️Units of the Dnepr Group of Forces engaged manpower and hardware of AFU 23rd national guard, 103rd and 121st territorial defence brigades close to Vyschetarazovka, Pokrovskoye, Nikopol (Dnepropetrovsk region) and Osokorovka (Kherson region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 90 Ukrainian troops, two motor vehicles, one Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery system, one 152-mm D-20 howitzer, two 122-mm D-30 howitzers, and one 85-mm D-44 gun.

▫️Operational-Tactical Aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, and Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces have engaged AFU manpower and hardware clusters in 115 areas during the day.

▫️Air defence systems shot down ten Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles.

📊 In total, 613 airplanes and 276 helicopters, 25,855 unmanned aerial vehicles, 529 air defence missile systems, 16,352 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,341 combat vehicles equipped with MRLS, 10,547 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 22,613 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.

❗️🇷🇺🇺🇦 Zaporizhia direction: liberation of Zagornoye by Russian troops

If earlier the main focus on the Zaporizhia direction was on the situation on the lines of Robotyne — Kopani and Novopokrovka — Verbove, today the Hulyaipole sector is actively discussed.

The reason was the statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense about the liberation of the village of Zagornoye southwest of Hulyaipole - a small settlement where, according to the 2001 census, only 14 people lived.

▪️The Russian defense department reported control over Zagornoye as early as March 2022, but against the background of AFU activity, it was later abandoned by Russian Armed Forces units.

▪️In 2023, the enemy was first driven out of positions in the area of the cemetery south of the village, and then from the settlement itself, but due to its location in the lowland, it was not possible to consolidate there until recently.

▪️Apparently, Zagornoye finally returned under the control of Russian troops in late May - early June. This happened, among other things, thanks to the control over the neighboring village of Mirne, which was liberated in the second half of March.

🔻On the other sectors of the Zaporizhia direction, the situation remains tense. At the same time, due to the bad weather in recent days, no active actions have been observed from either side.

Ukrainian formations took advantage of the lull to equip new fortifications, carry out rotation and supply a new batch of FPV drones to the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade. Similar measures were taken by the Russian Armed Forces personnel.

🇮🇱🇵🇸 Escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Zone

Chronicle of events for June 16, 2024

In the north of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli forces once again struck various areas of the Palestinian enclave's capital, but with less intensity compared to previous days.

In the south of the enclave, IDF units are engaged in battles in the Ash-Shubara camp and Tell as-Sultan. At the same time, the Israeli command announced the opening of a humanitarian corridor through the Kerem Shalom crossing from 08:00 to 19:00 to deliver essential goods.

In the West Bank, Israeli security forces conducted another series of raids in several settlements. The largest operation took place in Al-Fara'a, where two militants were detained and weapons and explosives were confiscated.

On the Lebanon-Israel border, the parties continue to exchange strikes. One of Hezbollah's hits fell on a residential building in Miskav Am. In turn, the Israeli forces reported the destruction of Lebanese group's targets.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Chronicles of the special military operation

for June 16, 2024

Over the past day, the Russian forces struck targets in the so-called Ukraine. The strikes hit Poltava, Cherkasy, Sumy, Chernihiv regions and the temporarily occupied territories of the DPR and Zaporizhia Region.

In the Slobozhansky direction, there are battles near the Volchansk Aggregate Plant, where the enemy tries to dislodge the Russian troops. In the area of Hlyboke, the AFU command is introducing new reserves.

In the Donetsk direction, the Russian Armed Forces are advancing in Krasnohorivka, seeking to dislodge the AFU from Shevchenko Park. Russian assault teams have reached the eastern outskirts of Maksymilianivka.

In the Vuhledar direction, Ukrainian formations were driven out of Paraskoviyivka, but the western part remains contested.

In the Avdiivka direction, the Russian troops expanded control west and north of Novoaleksandrivka - Arkhanhel'ske. They also entrenched in the east of Sokil.

In the Zaporizhia direction, the settlement of Zahirne was taken under control.
