The US is in preliminary talks (https://en.sputniknews.africa/20240104/1064457877.html) with Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Benin to use their airfields for housing US unarmed reconnaissance drones to stop the spread of the Al-Qaeda* and Daesh* terrorist groups, the report said.
The report added that the drones would allow US forces to aerially monitor militant movements along the coast and provide over-the-shoulder tactical and combat advice to local troops during operations. Washington believes Mali and Burkina Faso are too inundated with Islamist militants to receive Western help and that Niger is no longer a reliable ally after July's military takeover.
A senior Benin military officer was cited as saying that Benin has no objection to Washington's use of its airfield, but still needs to work out the details if they receive a formal American request, adding that Benin would benefit from a high-end drone fleet.

Since the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the people of Ukraine have had access to a single source of television news — an all-day broadcast packed with footage of Ukrainian tanks blasting Russian positions, medics operating near the frontline and political leaders rallying support abroad.
The show, Telemarathon United News, has been a major tool of Ukraine’s information war, praised by the government officials who regularly appear on it for its role in countering Russian disinformation and maintaining morale.
But after nearly two years of war, Ukrainians have grown weary of Telemarathon. What was once seen as a crucial tool for holding the country together is now increasingly derided as little more than a mouthpiece for the government.
Viewers have complained that the program often paints too rosy a picture of the war, hiding worrying developments on the frontline and the West’s eroding support for Ukraine — and ultimately failing to prepare citizens for a long war.
“Everyone is fed up with this picture that says, ‘We’re winning, everyone likes us and gives us money,’” said Oksana Romaniuk, the head of the Kyiv-based Institute of Mass Information, a media monitoring organization. “It’s state propaganda.”
By the end of 2022, viewership of the news program had shrunk to 14 percent of the television audience, Ms. Ostapa said. Today, it is down to 10 percent.
Ihor Kulias, a media expert monitoring Telemarathon for Detector Media, said that, for most of 2023, the show’s participants used language that emphasized “the effectiveness and skill of the Ukrainian forces,” while Russian forces were “described as being in a state of panic, experiencing significant losses and surrendering en masse.”
It was “a completely different reality” from the actual situation on the ground, Mr. Kulias said.

Summary of military operations on the Ukrainian front from the Russian telegram channel “Two Majors” on the morning of January 4, 2024.
At night, our Geraniums were operating in Ukraine: the Starokonstantinov airfield in the Khmelnitsky region was again hit. The combination of a 125-mm smoothbore gun and a multi-channel sight with thermal imaging, television, sighting and rangefinder channels, as well as a missile control channel, allows you to conduct targeted fire at targets (even helicopters) located at a distance of up to 5 km, at any time of the day and at any weather.
The tank also has two machine guns: coaxial with a 7.62 mm cannon and mounted on the turret, a remote-controlled combat module with a 12.7 mm machine gun. The latter allows the crew to fire while remaining inside the vehicle under the protection of the armor.
At the commander's place there are eight triplexes and a video surveillance system, providing full visibility.
“Proryv” is effectively protected from the main modern anti-tank weapons. In addition to armor, it is covered with Relikt dynamic protection units and is equipped with an automated system for setting up a multispectral curtain for protection against laser-guided missiles.
High mobility of the vehicle is ensured by a 1130-horsepower diesel engine and a relatively small combat weight of 49.5 tons.
Ergonomics have also improved radically. The T-90M crew now boasts comfortable seats, ample work space and personal air conditioning deflectors.

What does the US suspect North Korea has transferred to Russia?
- US suspects that Russia has now added additional missiles with the North Korean KN-23/Hwasong-11Ga. This weapon has a similar profile to the Iskander.
- Payload is estimated to be 500kg warhead
- Russia would be able to aid NK in improving the weapons accuracy and advising on countermeasures which the Iskander uses in the form of jammers and other countermeasures.

The equipment can work both against a single target and against a swarm of drones.
